1993-1998 Photo comparison of sand deposit
Summary Analysis: The 1958 photo shows recent construction of a rock groin. This feature is still visible and is located at the head of the Kadle Hole. At 800 feet upstream of this feature, there is a 1998 sand deposit that is 12 to 15 feet high, covering portions of bank that were observed to be eroded in 1997 high flows. This type of feature (high sand deposit) is also common below Highway 101, substantiating that, large amounts of material are deposited downstream and that much sand exists and is deposited in the Mad River which is not calculated into the County's figures of annual sediment yield.Discussion:
This site is located approximately 4,000 feet below the REA culverts and is against North Bank Road. In 1958 aerial photographs of this area shows construction of a rock groin. This feature is still visible and is located at the head of the Kadle Hole. At 800 feet upstream of this feature, there is a 1998 sand deposit that is 12 to 15 feet high, covering portions of bank that were observed to be eroded in 1997 high flows (See photos). This type of feature (high sand deposit) is also common below Highway 101, substantiating that, large amounts of bed materials are deposited downstream and that much sand exists and is deposited in the Mad River which is not calculated into the County's figures of annual sediment yield. This area shows no signs of degradation since at least 1958.
