Summary Analysis:

There has been no significant degradation of the river bed at this location since at least 1969 and 1971. The topo map and Army Corps cross sections show the bed of the river at or near 0' (feet) sea level. The PEIR (pg. 83) states that there will be little or no degradation in the river bed once the elevation is at 0'. Areas of aggradation of bed elevation has occurred since 1971. The February 1998 CHERT report states that no material is being transported down to this reach, which can be shown to be incorrect.

Discussion:

Collenburg's Dairy Stumps:

The attached photo shows a number of stumps located at the present bed elevation of the Mad River at this location. These old growth stumps have numerous root structures, some intertwined with adjacent roots and from preliminary glance indicates that they have always been at this location and not "dumped" at a later date. They are all facing upward and at the similar elevations. These are similarly located as in 1979 and the stumps were in similar positions. I have attached a recently compiled overlay of the river configuration of 1997 as compared to the river condition when the area was first mapped in 1854 to 1862. The overlay shows that at this very site there existed what appears to be (in the earlier maps), the northern extent of a spruce forest. This site bears need of further investigation, but would suggest anything but degradation.
